Recovery Mission in Tarawa

by

In August 2010, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command out of Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, sent a crew to the island of Tarawa to recover the missing remains of fallen World War II Marines. Click here to watch Jeremy Edward Shiok's footage from that mission.

Jeremy Edward Shiok is a writer from Anchorage, Alaska. His current book project, Atoll: A Historical Journey to the Central Pacific, retraces the World War II service timeline of his grandfather through the Pacific. Read more at www.atolljourney.weebly.com.

In November 1943, U.S. Marines fought one of the bloodiest battles of World War II at Tarawa. The dig is an effort to repatriate Marines who fell during the battle and were buried on the island.
