Painting of Pat Tillman.Painting of Pat Tillman. The Pat Tillman Foundation is now accepting applications for its 2013 class of Tillman Military Scholars.

The program, in its fifth year, will offer scholarships to 60 active-duty troops, veterans or their spouses. Candidates have until February 15 to submit their applications.

Scholarships are available to those pursuing degrees at four-year institutions in the United States. Though actual awards are based on the individual needs of the students, last year Tillman Scholars received an average of $11,000 per year.

Receiving a Tillman Military Scholarship also affords a student entry into the Tillman Community, an online and in-person networking group that includes the 230 students awarded scholarships since the program launched in 2009.

Pat Tillman gave up a promising professional football career to join the Army in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Following his death in Afghanistan in 2004, his friends and family created the Pat Tillman Foundation.
